St Mary's Church Institute

Teams


In the days before radio and television, people necessarily had to make their own entertainment. Amongst the leisure activities of the day, such as male voice choirs and the various sports teams, the churches often provided a social role beyond concerts and talks.

St Mary's Parish Church ran an Institute which enabled men of the town to participate in a number of sporting activities. Some team images have survived and are shown below.
