Art at the "Duke"

Mrs Barbara Hobday admires John Cox's painting of the Flying Scotsman

A Burton Latimer pub lost a bit of colour when a month-long exhibition ended yesterday, reported the Kettering Evening Telegraph in January 1982. Shoeworkers John Cox and Robert Pearce have been exhibiting their oil paintings annually at the Dukes Arms for the past five years. Mr Pearce, of Shannon Way, Burton Latimer said: "The exhibition has created a lot of interest. Some people were going to the pub especially to see the paintings. Because of the recession we have only managed to sell three, but it is nice that people came along to look at them."

Mr Pearce was encouraged to start painting six years ago by Mr Cox of Miller Road, Burton Latimer, who has been painting for 20 years. But the pub did not lose all the landscapes and paintings of horses and trains, as John and Robert usually leave four or five of their paintings there until the next exhibition.
